PSHE gives children the tools to help them understand how they are developing both socially and personally and investigate wider moral, social and cultural issues. PSHE education embodies what it takes for children to become a good citizen and the rights and responsibilities they possess currently, or those they will gain as they grow into young adults and beyond.

Our lessons aim to equip pupils with effective decision-making skills and the ability to calculate risk effectively. Class teachers use discussion as an effective tool to teach PSHE, allowing children time to articulate their thoughts and feelings in a calm, caring and respectful environment. In addition to discrete class sessions, PSHE features throughout the wider school curriculum and school ethos, with many opportunities taken to focus on topical and current issues during assemblies and focus events such as Mental Health Week.

By the time they leave our school, every child will have a deeply ingrained sense and understanding of the core values which underpin our school. In PSHE, this will manifest in the following outcomes for every child:

- To become caring members of the community with strong self-awareness, interlinked with the compassion of others.
- For all children to have the confidence, willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere.
- To become ready for adult life and twenty-first century living, solving the problems that may come about with creativity and imagination.
- To challenge themselves, and negative stereotypes, with an attitude of open-mindedness and respect.
- To have the character, responsibility and honesty required to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society.
- To have a good understanding of how to stay safe and healthy, and develop good relationships and be respectful.

New Relationship and Sex Education statutory guidance

It is a statutory requirement that all schools in England and Wales are teaching Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) as a fundamental part of the curriculum. As part of implementing the RSE curriculum, schools must consult with the children, parents, staff and governors to ensure there is a general consensus on our approaches to policy and the curriculum content.
